Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to question certain rulings from the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
