The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.
Extremely High Air Quality Readings
Various sections of Delhi showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.
In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x exceeding safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly pollution that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
However in recent months, the current local government petitioned the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited hours throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.
Several recording stations throughout Delhi registered pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Effects
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also initiated a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the celebrations.
Chronic Environmental Issue
The dangerously high readings of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around the festival period, the amount of dangerous particles in the environment has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Various Contamination Sources
The situation in the capital is resulting from a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Impact
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.
The pollution is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in the city.
