The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
