The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
