Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
