An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also made large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
